For Hannah

This morning has been an enlightening one for me. After a bad few days at home, when I have listened daily to health problems within the family, other things going on too, culminating yesterday with our boiler here at home which decided to expire without warning...just when I thought things could not get worse, it appeared that they already had. And then I had a visit from a neighbour...
This neighbour has a sixteen year old daughter, whose best friend decided to hang herself on Friday night. It kind of put my dilemmas and problems into perspective, and made me think, what actually motivates someone of that age, apparently with the whole world at their feet, to take their own life? I looked out of the window while my neighbour was here talking, listening as she described how her daughter Georgia had looked forward to the sleepover at her friend Hannah's house, intending to comfort her friend, who had just split from her boyfriend. They had been watching a movie in the lounge, and the friend went upstairs to the bedroom, leaving Georgia downstairs making coffee. When the friend didnt appear after half an hour, Georgia assumed she was taking a bath, and called out to her friend that her coffee was getting cold. When she didnt get an answer, she went upstairs, to find her friend had used a scarf to hang herself from the ceiling fan. Georgia was alone in the house, and tried in vain to lift her friend down...by which time it was obvious that her friend was dead.
I looked up at the pretty clouds floating across the sky, thinking to myself, that this young girl, Hannah, would never again see the clouds, or the spring flowers, or a little dog with its tail wagging, or a wedding day, or a 21st birthday party, or a vacation abroad....
She had left a note saying she couldn't live without the boyfriend, saying also that she loved her family, but that life was just too much to bear. At sixteen years of age, little more than a child, I found it terribly sad. I didn't know the young girl, but how much, in those few moments this morning, I felt for her, and her family. At sixteen she can have had little experience of life, of its emotions and complexities.....and now she would never know. Georgia will live this experience, I am sure, a thousand times over from last Friday onwards. It is something she will never forget. I didn't know Hannah, but she is now someone who I shan't forget either. May her soul rest now in peace with the angels.

How nice are you?
by Jane Powell

“If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”

We’ve all heard this saying. It’s something our parents reminded us of constantly. In fact, you my very well be cautioning your own children.

Now that you realize how hurtful words can be to others, have you every thought about the effects your own comments have on your self-esteem? Do you ever hear yourself saying nasty things about someone – that someone being you?

No one likes to be called “lazy,” “stupid,” or “fat,” and calling ourselves these names has a damaging effect on our self-worth. So today, take your own advice and the next time you begin to say something bad about yourself, try to stop. Instead of pointing out how little you have accomplished, why not acknowledge what you have achieved? And try replacing words like “I can’t” and “I won’t” with “I can” and “I will.”

Being churlish never served us when we were young, and that is still true. Be kind to yourself.

Below another nice share from my friend Millie:

THIS IS THE DEFINITION OF PRECISION!!

Those are US made Garand M-1 rifles (WWII), and they are heavy weapons (9 POUNDS EACH). When that one young fellow goes on his own - YOU'VE NEVER SEEN A RIFLE SPUN THAT FAST - note the collective "Ooooooooo !" from the audience.
